[Bxscience Key Club] Divisional Officers Application!

Hi Key Clubbers!

Our Lieutenant Governor Emma Cheng has released the applications for Divisional Officers. I hope you all take the time to read the different requirements for each position and consider them. Key Club International provides an abundance of opportunities for growing leaders and this is just one of those chances. Please take advantage of the time you do have to explore being a leader. Here are the positions:

  • Executive Assistant (1 person): As Executive Assistant, you will be serving as the Lieutenant Governor's right-hand helper. Your main job will be assisting me with organizing Divisional meetings and events, especially as the official head of the Divisional Events Committee. You will also be expected to assist me with miscellaneous tasks such as occasional paperwork and communication with the rest of the Division. Organization, responsibility, and leadership skills are essential for this job, so be ready to coordinate, plan, set deadlines, and complete assignments in a timely fashion. (Note: This job is an excellent stepping stone towards eventually becoming Lieutenant Governor.)
  • Historian (1 or 2 people depending on the quality and quantity of applications): As Historian, you will be responsible for keeping a record of Divisional meetings and events through various media forms such as photography or film. One of the crucial components of every Key Club year is the scrapbook or video contest at Leadership Training Conference. Thus, the Divisional Historian will play a critical role in ensuring that our Division has a comprehensive collection of material to use for both the contests and Divisional newsletters throughout the year. Dedication and communication with the Lieutenant Governor are crucial for this role, since you must be present at the various Divisional events and be able to share your collected materials. Any special equipment/cameras and technological skills (using programs like Photoshop or compiling online albums/resources to share photographs) will be a bonus!
  • Events Committee (5-10 people depending on the quality and quantity of applications): As one of the members of the Events Committee, you will help plan Divisional events. Under the Executive Assistant, you will be expected to attend extra meetings outside of school with the rest of the committee. Qualities like dedication, diligence, organization, and planning will be highly valued.
You cannot apply for Executive Assistant if you are an officer. All the other positions are open to all members. You can apply for as many positions as you want as long as you are eligible.

How to Apply
You have 2 options. You can 1. fill out the form online 2. fill out the PDF form (attached).
Online Forms:
Executive Assistant
Historian
Events Commitee

The applications are due Monday, July 4 at 11:59 pm. More information is found on the attached PDF forms. You can also email Emma at emma.c.315@gmail.com.

Bronx Science Key Club is holding reelections for Key Club Editor. If you applied for that position, you can still apply for Divisional Positions. Since the decisions for Divisional Positions will be decided before reelections, you can decide whether or not to continue running for Editor after Divisional Positions are made. Here is the form for Editor if you are interested.

Also, we have one more event to add to our summer! We will be volunteering at the Runyon 5K at Yankee Stadium to raise money for cancer research. Please read this form and fill it out if you are interested in volunteering.

Another note... Sadly the Key Club Picnic has been postponed to next week due to the high chance of rain.

Good luck to those who still have the last of their Regents and to the others... HAPPY SUMMER!

[Bxscience Key Club] IMPORTANT: Key Club Editor

Hi Key Clubbers,

Sadly, our Key Club Editor Linda Zhou will be resigning because she would like to focus on improving her grades during her senior year. Let's all wish her good luck as she works to achieve this goal. We will be holding reelections for the new Key Club Editor in September before the Club Fair. The date will be announced in September.

As the Key Club Editor, you will be expected to routinely update the club website so that club members will know what is happening. You can check out the NY District website for resources on being a Club Bulletin Editor and Club Webmaster. As the Key Club Editor, we hope that you will revive our club newsletter. Linda has created a newsletter that you can look at for guidance. In order to produce the newsletter, you can work with the Public Relations Committee to gather articles and the Scrapbooking Committee to gather photos. You will also be expected to send in an article each month for our Division Newsletter. This is a great opportunity for those who wish to take on a larger role in the club. If you are presently a Committee Chair, you can still apply and we will find someone else to take on your previous position once you have been elected.

More information is found on the form which you fill out if you are interested in running for Key Club Editor.

I definitely encourage all those who are interested to apply. You never know where this might lead you in your Key Club career!

Best,
Victoria Li

[Bxscience Key Club] Summer Opportunities!

Hi Key Clubbers!

Here's a project that you guys can do over the summer. It's going to require some commitment. However, the good part is that because this is community service, I will give you points for attending!

This workshop aims to gather the stories of immigrants which I feel is great because most of us are either immigrants ourselves or descendents of immigrants. Read below if you're interested!

Also, I have another summer opportunity. If you missed out at applying to the Student Leadership Institute from Chinatown Youth Initiatives, I have another leadership institute you can attend. It's from Pencils of Promise, which we volunteered for in November for their big fundraiser. You should definitely click on this link to read more about it and sign up! If you are a senior, you can also sign up. I'll be at all, if not most, of the sessions so never fear about being alone!

Good luck on Regents/Finals!
Victoria Li

Dear Vivian Xiao, Benjamin Fang, and the Bronx Science Key Club,

Greetings from the Asian American Writers' Workshop! I am writing to let you know about a new workshop series that we are launching in the summer, called TalkStory. I think it will be of great interest to you as student leaders of Bronx Science Key Club. Community service credit is available, so please pass along to your club members.

We are planning a series of six oral history writing workshops to be held between late June- mid July, aimed at bringing the stories of immigrant women, both young and old, into focus. We are looking to connect high school students with the elderly to collect their stories.

The idea is that we will hold these workshops in a Chinatown senior center. This is not a kind of conversation that typically happens outside of the home, and we believe it is vital for these stories to be told. We are specifically looking for non-native English speakers for this program, as the workshop hopes to generate cross-generational dialogue on experiences of migration.

The workshops will be moderated by Deanna Fei, a former Fullbright scholar and author of A Thread of Sky, which was a New York Times Editor's Choice pick.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could pass this information on to your fellow students. Interested students should email Tara Sarath at tsarath@aaww.org or call (212) 494-0061 for further details. I have attached an English and Chinese language flyer with more information.

Best,

p.s. If you are unable to participate in TalkStory but would like to get involved with the Asian American Writers' Workshop, we are also offering a FREE poetry and photography workshop for young Asian American and Arab American women, entitled Double Exposures: Documenting War at Home. We are currently having difficulty meeting our enrollment. So if you know someone who's interested in photography or writing, please forward https://www.aaww.org/ or https://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/event.php?eid=126303187450185. No experience is necessary, but an interest in visual or literary arts is desired. We are accepting applications on a rolling basis until the class is filled.

[Bxscience Key Club] Friday June Divisional!!!

Hi everyone!

I'm sorry for all the emails I have been sending, but I need you guys to attend the June Divisional which is taking place this Friday from 5 pm - 7 pm in the Bronx Science Cafeteria. Because this is the last divisional before school ends (and also the last time we will officially gather as a club before school ends), I want you all to make the effort to attend.

I need you guys to do these 2 things for the Divisional:

1. Fill out this form informing me that you will be attending. You can fill out this form even if you do not plant o participate in the painting service project.
2. Fill out this form to show that you will be painting a mandala. More information is on the form. I will be collecting the money for this after 9th period on Friday in front of the music room. I don't want to collect it during the divisional because I want to avoid any mess ups with the money. You will be getting 10 extra points added onto your points for attending the divisional. You can only participate in this project if you tell us beforehand. If you find out that you want to paint on Friday but you did not tell me, you will not be able to because we only have a limited number of painting sets available.

Because this divisional will be happening at our school, I expect you to be there!!!!

We are also making birthday cards. These birthday cards need to follow these criteria:

  1. Nothing like glitter that could get into the meal containers
  2. No personal information
  3. The inside should read "from your friends at God's Love We Deliver"
Herman Li will be collecting these cards on June 14th outside the music room after 9th period. You can email him at lih4@bxscience.edu if you have any more questions. Each card will give you 2 points.

Please fill out the Amazing Race Survey so that Alexander Guo will know when we are available and can plan out this divisional event.

So please, attend the divisional and participate in painting a mandala! Hope to see you on Friday!
Victoria Li

[Bxscience Key Club] June Divisional: Fri. 6/10 at BX SCI

Hi everyone!

This Friday is the June Divisional and it's taking place in the cafeteria of BRONX SCIENCE!!!!!!!! You know what that means right? That means we have to be the club with the most members at the divisional!

I need you guys to do two things for me. Trust me, it won't be difficult.
1. Fill out this form if you know you will be going to the divisional. Fill out regardless if you will or will not be painting a mandala.
2. Fill out this form if you want to paint a mandala. I can collect the money until Friday before the divisional at the latest but I need to know the number of participants by WED. NIGHT!

It is really important that you do this so that I can send the lists to our Lieutenant Governor Emma.

This is the last divisional before school ends and might also actually be the last time we can come together as a club before school ends. The divisional is from 5 pm -  7 pm and I know that seems late but it's a Friday night and you'll be with other Key Clubbers in our division! Just like when we made stuffed animals for Toys for Tots. So if you can come to the divisional, I would really appreciate it! So will the people in nursing homes and hospitals where the painted mandalas will be hanging.

Also, please fill out the Amazing Race Survey so that Alexander Guo, who is organizing this great divisional event, will know when people are available.

Hope to see you all on Friday!
Victoria Li

[Bxscience Key Club] June Divisional + Updates!

Hi Key Clubbers!

Thanks for helping out at the last meeting and we were able to raise a total of $91 from the raffle! We'll be organizing a poll later on so the club, as a whole, can decide where the money will be donated.

June Divisional
Even though last Thursday was the last Key Club meeting, we have a June Divisional this Friday June 5 from 5 - 7 pm at BRONX SCIENCE in the Student Cafeteria!!!! (YAY!!!!) This is going to be a special divisional because there's a service project in it. We will be painting mandalas for roughly an hour during the Divisional. The finished mandalas will then be used to help decorate nursing homes and hospitals as a great way to help contribute back to our communities. There is more information on the form for this and the deadline for signing up is June 8. However, if you only want to go to the divisional and not participate in this service project, that is totally fine. Just show up!

Amazing Race Survey
The time has come for another Amazing Race! For those who have no idea what I am talking about, this is an event where you race around completing challenges at different locations. I went to it last year and it was AMAZING (haha). Our very own Alexander Guo is organizing this event and he needs to know when you guys are all available. I want you all to fill out this survey and help out a fellow Bronx Science Key Clubber in organizing this awesome fundraising event!

Bxsci Key Club 2010-2011~Year of Unforgettable Memories Video - Created by Alexander Guo
It's time for Alex's annual Key Club video! Sadly, this will be his last. You can watch it by clicking here. It will direct you to Facebook. Enjoy and savor the memories! Please watch in HQ!

New Committee Chairs
If you weren't at the last meeting, we announced the new committee chairs of 2011-2012!
Project: Herman Li and Ivy Lee
Fundraising: Naurin Shaki and Thomas Chan
Public Relations: Alexandra Garcia and Amanda Tam
Scrapbooking: Xida Zou and Cindy Lin
If you have any ideas that pertain to these committees, these are the new chairs who can help you. Their contact information will be updated on the website soon so stay tuned. Congratz to the new committee chairs and I hope you great success during this year!

John Kieran Volunteer Day
You will helping to maintain the John Kieran Nature Trail and the surrounding forest in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx on Saturday June 11! You can find more information in the form and sign up there.

Yours in caring and service,
Victoria Li
