Hello everyone,

We have an advocacy opportunity for you to voice your opinion over the death of Private Danny Chen. An article about him was posted on Facebook and that was when I first heard about him. You can find that article here and I recommend you to read it. He was very much like us, he was raised in Chinatown and he would have almost been 20 if he was still alive.

Pvt. Danny Chen was a 19-year-old Chinese-American soldier who died from non-combat injuries after being deployed for only 2 months. He was found with a gunshot wound to his chin in a guard tower in Kandahar, Afghanistan on October 3, 2011. Army investigators have found that Pvt. Danny Chen was the target of racial slurs, physical hazing, and excessive exercises that quickly turned into abuse, on a daily basis for more than 6 weeks. Eight of his superiors, including one Officer, face one or more charges ranging from dereliction of duty, making false statements, assault, involuntary manslaughter, and negligent homicide.

Because of the suspicious nature of Danny's death and the army's history, we demand greater transparency. We, the undersigned, demand that any court martials be convened in the U.S. We must have access to these proceedings to ensure justice is served. It is only just for those charged to face the community that Danny belonged to and for which he was singled out. Danny's parents must be able to see and ask those who were responsible for the death of their only child, "Why did you do this to our son?"

On May 26th, Private Danny Chen would have been 20. In order to fight for justice, birthday cards will be created. I have attached a file with more information. It is meant to be on a single sheet of paper double sided and then folded so that the Picture of Chen is on one side and that the address to OCA-NY (Organization of Chinese Americans-NY) is on the other. You can either use the attachment provided or create a card of your own.

We will collect the cards at this Thursday's meeting and I will be handing them in on Friday.

Please let me know if you have any questions,

Victoria

Re: [Bxscience Key Club] Key Club Update

Hello everyone!

There's one more message that I would like to add on from Immediate Past Lieutenant Governor Emma Cheng:

Hi Division 11! PLEASE order the official Division hoodies athttp://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ZDLR5NB as soon as possible. The final deadline will be Sunday, April 29 and the hoodies will be about $25-35 (the more we order, the cheaper the price will be). If you filled in an order
for hoodies at the April Divisional, you do not have to fill in the survey.

Also want to add that the next meeting will be the induction ceremony for the new officers. Please be there to support them! :)

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
Victoria

[Bxscience Key Club] Help the school!

Hello Key Clubbers!

This is not another Key Club update but a favor I am asking. I am organizing Bronx Science to participate in an energy conservation competition to help our school win $1000 (and save money on our energy bill!).

We have volunteered at several environmental events such as planting trees and removing invasive plants. This is a chance to bring that back to our school and make it more GREEN :)

And for you artistic people or those who were in S!NG or the Musical, please check out the Music Video section of this email!

Participate in Biggest Loser!
Work together to reduce Bronx Science's energy usage! Alliance for Climate Education (ACE) is holding the Biggest Loser: Energy Competition for high schools to compete to see who can cut their energy usage and CO2 emissions the most. We meet on Wednesdays during SGI in Room 333. If you would like to meet during other times, please email me at the email address below and we can arrange it. Please spread the word!

Please click on the links below to learn more. I have also made a presentation, which condenses all the information for the competition. Easier for you to read!

Make Music Video to Inspire Energy Conservation!
Bronx Science was awarded a $100 Starter Grant from ACE for the creative Bonus Project we submitted! The Bonus Project's purpose is to spread the message of energy conservation. Our Bonus Project is to create a music parody video. We are looking for people who are interested in writing the lyrics, shooting the video, singing, dancing, or doing whatever is needed to produce it! Let us know if you or any of your friends are interested!

Cool Fact
Reason to get excited. Daniela Lapidous of the ACE Youth Reps wishes us good luck and hopes that we win! (She replied back to my post on a college Facebook group for accepted students). Get pumped!
You can learn more about her here: http://www.acespace.org/get-inspired/youth-reps

PLEASE SHARE THIS WITH YOUR FRIENDS!

If you have any questions, please email Victoria Li at liv2@bxscience.edu

-----

This was a very long email and I hope you read it all. I am asking you, not as the Key Club President, but as a concerned citizen of our school environment to please join me in this competition.

Yours in Caring and Service,
Victoria Li
