[Bxscience Key Club] Earth Day Information

Sorry this is so late, everybody. This is a message from Michelle...

Hello Earth Day Volunteers!

First of all, I would like to let you know that I am extremely grateful for your help! I'm sure this will be an amazing Earth Day celebration and we could not do this without you!

In this email I will run through some quick points to keep in mind for tomorrow.

1) Stations: You have been randomly assigned to different stations to work at that can be found in the attached PDF. If you would like to change stations, you can switch with someone from another station but it would be best, if you stayed at your assigned station. We would also like to avoid having tables unattended so please stay at your station until the volunteer for the next periods shows up. I am sure your teachers will understand if you are 1-2 minutes late.

2) Selling Policy: We always sell merchandise during Earth Day. Although we usually accept money for this merchandise, this year we will have a different system. Everyone who wishes to purchase anything during Earth Day must first exchange their money to "LEAP Money" which will come in the form of a red raffle ticket. The station to exchange money to "LEAP Money" will be at the center of the courtyard in the main selling station. One dollar is equivalent to one raffle ticket whereas $0.50 is half a raffle ticket. Nothing will be lower than that. Now what does this mean for you guys?-->NO ONE AT ANY TABLE SHOULD ACCEPT ANYTHING BUT RAFFLE TICKETS AS MONEY!! Please make sure that this rule is being followed so we can make this run smoothly! Also, make sure to store all of the LEAP Money you receive into the manila envelope for your respective station!!

3) Finding Me for Help: I will be in the courtyard during the entire Earth Day Celebration (i.e. all lunch periods). I will be at the main selling station in the center of the courtyard exchanging dollars for LEAP Money. If you need anything or do not remember what station you were assigned to, feel free to approach me and I will be ready to help!

Key Clubbers: Make sure you check in with me every period you are volunteering to get credit!

4) Clothing Drive: This year, we have decided to incorporate a clothing drive in Earth Day. In order to help make this a success, we would appreciate if you could bring in any clothing items you do not want. We also have a special policy that allows you to get an item of clothing for every item you bring in. Woohoo! Alternatively, you can just donate your clothing item and rest assured, that it will be given to those in need!

5) Can you bring in fruits?: If you have spare bananas, strawberries or juice at home and are willing to bring it in to help make smoothies, your help would be greatly appreciated! Drop any fruits/juice you may have in Room 333 before 1st period.

6) Speaker: It would be great if you could come and show your support for our environmental speaker from the Alliance for Climate Education (ACE). She will be speaking to students during 9th period in Room 131, and I heard the speaker has something very special in store!

Again, I would like to thank you for all your support and I look forward to seeing all of you tomorrow! Let's make this our BEST EARTH DAY YET!!!!

[Bxscience Key Club] Meeting room change

Hey ya'll!

The meeting, tomorrow, will take place in either the 1) teacher's cafeteria, 2) the student cafeteria, 3) the auditorium, or 4) the courtyard.
The reason we are not having the meeting in our usual room, room 334, is because of the concert. The musicians need to get into their vibe in the music room.
Once I find out which room we can use, I'm going to put up signs on the doors of each of those rooms, and on my locker in the global wing to direct you to the proper location. Hopefully, they won't be taken down. But regardless, I'll also be screaming it down the hall heheee.

Bring $3 for the raffle! I'll explain what we will be raffling off, at the meeting. Each ticket will cost $3 and the money will go into our fundraising projects.

Please submit articles to Connie Liang and Qing Lin for Jessica's June Newsletter!

Here is the list of upcoming events:
Here are some other things to do!

[Bxscience Key Club] Re: AIDS Walk Walking

WOOOPS sorry Guys I didn't include time

We shall be meeting up at the proposed meeting spot at 8:00am giving us enough time to take attendance and then go meet up with the rest of our ridiculously enormous district.

On Fri, May 18, 2012 at 2:33 PM, Jae Hwi Kwon <kwonj2@bxscience.edu> wrote:

I know the NY District is meeting up at the 59th St. and 5th Ave entrance of Central Park, but we will have to meet up separately to take attendance and take any on day donations.
SO we are going to meet up 2 blocks away at the East 61st St. and 5th Ave. entrance. It might be the smallest entrance in the park.
The easiest way to get there is probably by taking the N, Q, or R train to 59th St. and 5th Ave. ( Yeah Yeah I know it's RIGHT THERE)

Join the team Bronx Science Key Club - 3071

For all the people doing the race, here is an explanation of what is going to happen
At the meeting point, everyone racing will be given a piece of a puzzle with a number written on the back of it. Your teammates will have the puzzle pieces that fit yours and has the same number written on the back. You will not be told who your teammates are :P
At this point you should race towards the finish, where you will see Vice President Jae Kwon standing somewhere around the finish line. The finish line is incredibly crowded so you will probably have to hunt me down. But as more key clubbers finish the race, you will be able to see where the key club has conglomerated.
To win you and your teammates must have found each other and fit your puzzle pieces together. You must show me the pieces of your puzzle at the finish line.
Understood? Kay good.

Have a Fun Weekend Guys! See you on Sunday~

[Bxscience Key Club] Newsletter is Out! ::) Glance through it and smile.

Hello keyclubbers!

I am glad to finally present to you the first issue of the newsletter for the 2012-2013 year!
(I published it before 11:59, fyi, so I kept my promise!)

Reasons to read it:

  • Connie, Qing and I worked very hard on editing articles for it and myself formating it
(even though I made 1342343 mistakes, ITS OKAY, its still legible!!)
  • And your fellow keyclubbers worked hard to write articles for it!!!!!
  • Hunt for pictures of yourself in it and smile
  • recall the memories of recent events that you went to and smile
  • laugh at my poor formatting skills
  • out of courtesy to us Newsletter kids and people who have submitted!

So PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE read it!!!:
http://issuu.com/bxscikeyclub/docs/issue1?mode=window&backgroundColor=%23222222

On a less annoying note: A big thank you to all of you who submitted your articles! If your article did not appear in this issue, do not be discouraged!
The articles will be forwarded to the District Editor (of NY State keyclubs!), the lovely Holy Cheong, may decide to put it into her issue!
(PS you will get your points, hang tight!)

I will be sending another email regarding submissions for the next newsletter (expected release: JUNE 15th), so look out for that! :) I promise I'll learn not to squish 2342343 articles together...

Have a good early Wednesday past midnight! Dont cram too hard, AP KIDS!

[Bxscience Key Club] Lotsa News!

Hey ya'll!

Sorry there was no meeting last week. Even though I had an extra two hours to study, I still probably got a 2 on my APUSH. (BTW, if any of you have any questions about APUSH, you can email me at tama@bxscience.edu). Since we did not have a meeting last week, there are a bunch of things that I'm bursting to tell all of you. Im going to add almost everything into this email so that we can do something during the meeting before the other clubs get to our school for the  DIVISIONAL!! It is going to be on Thursday (yes, this Thursday), after our meeting so stayayay! It is our second to last Divisional of the school year, so stay and represent your school. Be proud that we always have the biggest turn out of the other schools :D

Despite the canceled meeting last week, I heard about a lot of projects that Key Clubbers undertook. Some made videos to promote the free rice campaign, others handed out roses on Japan Day for a jubilee project to help a Key Clubber from Staten Island Tech, and I saw many lovely cameras at the events this weekend. I also heard about the gagillion articles written and sent to Jessica, Qing, and Connie. Good job writing them and keep it up! :)So, here goes!

Upcoming events!
  1. NYCCAH this Saturday! Those of you who signed up for this event and gave me your waivers should expect an email from me, and the coordinator of the event. (You have a little assignment to do that will be super duper quick).
  2. AIDS Walk this Sunday! You can still sign up to walk. Look for a link on our lovely website (bxscikeyclub.weebly.com)
  3. Sadie Nash Leadership Project has prepared a youth-led conference themed, "Never Stop Questioning: Speak on What's Real!"All high school teens are welcome to join for interactive workshops on gender & sexuality, the school-to-prison pipeline, and women & the media. It will be held at St. Joseph's High School in Brooklyn, on Saturday, May 19th from 10am-4pm. Lunch and a light breakfast will be served. Victoria Li fowarded the information to me and she got the info from her friend at Hunter who helped organize it. Victoria said she went three years ago and it was a great experience. It is also free!! So if you have nothing to do this weekend, you should definitely go. Here is the facebook event:  http://www.facebook.com/events/217973894972488/. A flyer is attached to this email.
  4. Great Strides Walk on 6/3. Check out the form on our website. I'll be closing it Thursday night.
Other stuff!
  1. There has been a little change up in our committees and committee heads. The news will be announced at the meeting, though I know most of you already know of the changes. Heads, please keep it on the dl.
  2. There is a great summer program called the Summer Leadership Institute. The program is great because it highly encourages high school youth of any gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or location of residence. The sessions are on weekends and the application is due on May 27. Check out this event:  http://www.facebook.com/events/363700773688802/  for more information. The following links are the application in pdf format and downloaded doc format, respectively.

Victoria Li did it last summer and she enjoyed it a lot. Benjamin Fang, the president before Victoria, also participated in it and it made his summer an unforgettable experience. Based on what theyve told me and who they have introduced me to, you make a heck of a lot of great friends there.

3. Do you know a good song? List it here:

A couple of important and semi old things:
  1. Bring in the bracelets that you made last last week! Please give them to Jessica at the end of the meeting.
  2. We are still participating in the 1st Annual District New York Hunger Games : FreeRice previously named: The First Annual Division 11 Summer Solstice Interdivisional Literal FreeRice Hunger Games Battle Royale 2013. Here is the facebook event link:  http://www.facebook.com/events/365591903491114/. If you don't have a facebook, you can read the following instructions to participate  The rules are simple. Try to donate more than 75,000 grains of rice. (Our Goal as a Division Shall set at 2,000,000) This may seem like a simple task, but heed my warning, it is not. Each tribute must register and join the group here : http://freerice.com/content-group/new-york-district-division-11-key-club

For each question you answer, you donate 10 grains of rice. Daily DIVISIONAL Progress can be viewed here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AtaUkGYGQNFydDFCQWZGcmJ6T3NET0xIT3R6Wmtfc3c#gid=0
  3. We will be having a Division 11 BBQ Fundraiser sometime in July, but Herman (our awesome LTG.) has asked us to fill out a survey to get a better sense of our preferences. Make sure you fill it out here!: https://docs.google.com/a/bxscience.edu/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dGFWR0tSZXBUZDhFZXd5RGxyN1dOVkE6MQ#gid=0
  4. Also, please apply for Divisional Board Positions...  Represent our club!!! Build fantastic friendships with other Key Clubbers from schools in our Division 11 as you plan fundraisers, divisionals, and take pictures of friends during interclubbing events. The deadline to apply is May 10, two days away. (Submit your letter of recommendation or sample photos to Herman's email address at HermanLi.ltg@nydkc.org shortly after you submit your application.) I was a Historian, along with Shuo from Stuyvesant Key Club. We took pictures at the Amazing Race II and shared them with Emma and the rest of the clubs in the division. I also took pictures at divisional project events and every divisional. I highly encourage the dslr owners out there to apply! It's super fun and you feel important :)
See ya soon! :)
