[Bxscience Key Club] Bronx Science Key Club: Chinatown Beautification Day

Hi everyone!

August is almost beginning and we have 2 events coming up! They're the Damon Runyon 5K and Chinatown Beautification Day. Damon Runyon 5K registration is officially closed which means that I cannot add any people on afterwards.

But Chinatown Beautification Day... The registration has not opened yet but I want to give you guys an overview of the event. This is a bit different from our other events because it's a TWO DAY EVENT!

1. Workshops (Sat. Aug. 20)
   * You pick 2 workshops out of 8
   * Variety of topics
2. Chinatown Clean Up (Sun. Aug. 21)
   * What it sounds like, CLEAN UP :D

During this event, you also get a tshirt that has a winning design. At the moment, they are accepting tshirt designs until August 7 at 7 PM. I know that we have tons of talented artists ;) who are totally capable of sending in AWESOME designs. Here are the criteria:
- The design should have something that represents our organization (i.e. CYI - Chinatown Youth Initiatives)
- The design should have something that represents the event (i.e. CBD - Chinatown Beautification Day)
- The design should have our theme of the year (i.e. "Our Town, Our Time, Our Campaign)
- Please use lighter color for the shirt, considering the possible warm temperature of the cleanup day
- You only need to design the front of the shirt
- Make it funny, interesting, lovely, and appropriate
Please send the design to cbd@cyinyc.org. You can do the design by hand, a software, or a shirt design website.

I'll let you guys know when you can begin signing up for this event once registration is opened, which should be 2-3 weeks before the event.

Enjoy the rest of July!
Victoria Li

[Bxscience Key Club] New Summer Updates!

Hi everyone!

Just wanted to give you guys some updates. :D

Upcoming Events
The Damon Runyon 5K form is closing on July 29 at 5 pm. If you want to sign up later, I cannot make any exceptions. All volunteers must be on the security list for Yankee Stadium and the people organizing the event will be closing their form at that time. If you are not on the security list, there is no way for you to get into the stadium during the day of the event. Sign up if you're interested. Click here for the form!

The Sand Castle Contest is happening this Sunday and you can still sign up. Incoming freshmen who are interested in Key Club will be at this event! If they have any questions, please help them out. Click here for the form!

Opportunity over the Summer
I'm interning at the non-profit Pencils of Promise, which builds schools in developing countries and even Justin Bieber supports them. We have even volunteered with them before! Over the summer, they are holding leadership sessions for high school students for FREE. The first session was last week so there are more coming every week. I strongly encourage you guys to check it out and sign up at www.pencilsofpromise.org/pli. They're held on weekdays from 2-5 pm. You can sign up for as many sessions you can attend.

Have a wonderful summer. Can't believe it's almost August so make the most of it!

{science_ACJ} A news feature in Fuel Price Hike

Hello People,

A news feature on Fuel Price Hike. It is an attempt to analyse justifications given by the government and its supporters. More importantly, I have tried to see how people's daily lives have changed because of this price rise.

{science_ACJ} Prof. Baskaran appointed Distinguished Research Chair at Perimeter Institute

Friends:

Here is some good news. Eminent Indian theoretical physicist Prof. Ganapathy Baskaran of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai, has been appointed as a Distinguished Research Chair at the Perimeter Institute, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, along with seven others.

In making the announcement, Dr. Turok stated, "We are thrilled to welcome these eight world-leading scientists to PI's research community. Science is an inherently human process, and bringing the right people together is often the key to success. Each of these new DRCs will bring significant new ideas and expertise to PI. We cannot tell exactly what they will do, but based on their past record we know it will be very exciting."

Distinguished Research Chairs come to PI for extended periods each year to do research. The program enables them to be part of Perimeter's scientific community while retaining permanent positions at their home institutions. The new appointees join PI's 19 current Distinguished Research Chairs.

The press release from Perimeter Institute states: Ganapathy Baskaran is an Emeritus Professor at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai in India, where he has recently founded the Quantum Science Centre. He has made important contributions to the field of strongly correlated quantum matter. Novel emergent quantum phenomena in matter, including biological ones, are his passion and research focus. He is well known for his contributions to the theory of high temperature superconductivity and for discovering emergent gauge fields in strongly correlated electron systems. He predicted p-wave superconductivity in Sr2RuO4, a system believed to support Majorana fermion mode, which is a popular qubit for topological quantum computation. In recent work, he predicted room temperature superconductivity in optimally doped graphene.

[Bxscience Key Club] Divisional Applications Deadline Extended

Hi Key Clubbers!

Emma will be extending the deadline for Divisional Position Applications if you contact her personally at emmacheng.ltg@nydkc.org. I encourage anyone who is interested to apply. Do not be afraid that you have no experience, especially to the younger Key Clubbers. This is the time when you are not that busy in high school and you should definately take advantage of this opportunity before senior year (and college applications...) hits you. Below are the descriptions for each position. You can apply to as many positions as you want as long as you are eligible (no club officers are allowed to apply for Executive Assistant).
  • Executive Assistant (1 person): As Executive Assistant, you will be serving as the Lieutenant Governor's right-hand helper. Your main job will be assisting me with organizing Divisional meetings and events, especially as the official head of theDivisional Events Committee. You will also be expected to assist me with miscellaneous tasks such as occasional paperwork and communication with the rest of the Division. Organization, responsibility, and leadership skills are essential for this job, so be ready to coordinate, plan, set deadlines, and complete assignments in a timely fashion. (Note: This job is an excellent stepping stone towards eventually becoming Lieutenant Governor.)
  • Historian (1 or 2 people depending on the quality and quantity of applications):As Historian, you will be responsible for keeping a record of Divisional meetings and events through various media forms such as photography or film. One of the crucial components of every Key Club year is the scrapbook or video contest at Leadership Training Conference. Thus, the Divisional Historian will play a critical role in ensuring that our Division has a comprehensive collection of material to use for both the contests and Divisional newsletters throughout the year. Dedication and communication with the Lieutenant Governor are crucial for this role, since you must be present at the various Divisional events and be able to share your collected materials. Any special equipment/cameras and technological skills (using programs like Photoshop or compiling online albums/resources to share photographs) will be a bonus!
  • Events Committee (5-10 people depending on the quality and quantity of applications): As one of the members of the Events Committee, you will help planDivisional events. Under the Executive Assistant, you will be expected to attend extra meetings outside of school with the rest of the committee. Qualities like dedication, diligence, organization, and planning will be highly valued.
Please click on the links below for the forms to fill out.

And again, if you are interested then you should definitely apply. :D
